on providing anatomic pathology diagnostic and healthcare
information services, today announced the acquisition
of Chappell-Joyce Pathology Association, a full-service
hospital-based pathology practice located in Texarkana,

Chappell-Joyce Pathology Association and its three physicians
have maintained an excellent reputation in the Texarkana
area for over 50 years. The practice has solid, long-standing

six hospitals (over 500 beds in the aggregate) throughout
Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. They also service four
surgery centers and a reference laboratory.
"The addition of Chappell-Joyce Pathology Association
and its pathologists further complements AmeriPath's
presence in eastern Texas and presents synergistic opportunities
with our other practices in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area
for the integration and consolidation of marketing activities." commented
James C. New, AmeriPath's Chairman and CEO. He added, "Chappell-Joyce
Pathology Association is one of the few anatomic pathology
practices to operate the AutoCyte (thin-layer Pap smear
preparation) and AutoPap (automated screening of Pap
smears) systems in tandem, and is the first practice
to utilize the AutoPap system in the region. These activities
greatly enhance AmeriPath's women's health initiatives. The
addition of this practice will provide greater leverage
with regional managed care organizations and is of strategic
significance to the development of our Texas regional
business model."
