AMERIPATH ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT WITH A. BERNARD ACKERMAN, MD
Riviera Beach, FL, July 2, 1999 - AmeriPath, Inc. (Nasdaq:PATH),
an integrated physician group practice committed to providing
anatomic pathology services of high quality, has entered
into a services agreement effective July 1 with A. Bernard
Ackerman, M.D., widely regarded as the preeminent dermatopathologist
in the world. Terms of the agreements were not disclosed.
In order to maximize the effectiveness of Dr. Ackerman's
affiliation with the Company, AmeriPath has established
the "Ackerman Academy of Dermatopathology" and a laboratory
for dermatopathology in New York City. The Academy plans
to have an accredited dermatopathology fellowship training
program with state-of-the-art instrumentation, including
a 25-head microscope, and one of the most technologically
advanced audiovisual systems available. The diagnostic
facility, AmeriPath New York, will operate as a licensed
independent outpatient laboratory specializing in dermatopathology.
In addition to Dr. Ackerman, these facilities will employ
Dr. Joan M. Mones, Dr. Ying Guo, and Dr. Patricia A.
Heller, three experienced dermatopathologists.
For the past six years, Dr. Ackerman served as Professor
of Dermatology and Pathology, as well as Director of
an Institute for Dermatopathology at Jefferson Medical
College in Philadelphia. For the previous 20 years, he
was Professor of Dermatology and Pathology and Director
of Dermatopathology at New York University School of
Medicine. In addition to having taught thousands of residents,
fellows, and practitioners of dermatology and pathology
worldwide, Dr. Ackerman has written more than 35 books
about dermatopathology and is the founder and editor
of the journal, Dermatopathology: Practical and Conceptual.
Two honorary degrees have been bestowed on him from the
University of Giessen in Germany in 1998 and from the
University of Patras in Greece in 1999. For the past
several decades, he has had a very large practice of
dermatopathology, characterized particularly by consultations
that are sent to him by colleagues in dermatology and
pathology who seek his opinion in the diagnosis of difficult
cases. In New York City, Dr. Ackerman is affiliated with
St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital.
"We believe that our affiliation with Dr. Ackerman and
the development of these two facilities will propel AmeriPath
into the forefront of the practice of dermatopathology
worldwide, as well as establish an extensive outpatient
practice for our services in a very active New York market," said
James C. New, Chairman and CEO of AmeriPath. "We are
very proud to announce our association with Dr. Ackerman,
and his three colleagues, which should certainly strengthen
and enhance AmeriPath's existing group of renowned dermatopathologists.
The formation of a teaching academy of this magnitude
demonstrates our significant commitment to the advancement
of the field of dermatopathology."
"After a six-year hiatus at Jefferson Medical College,
I have returned to New York City to co-found what is
intended to be the premier teaching center in dermatopathology
in the world, namely, the Ackerman Academy of Dermatopathology," commented
Dr. Ackerman. "Its purpose is to provide accurate diagnoses
with dispatch, to train students of all kinds in dermatopathology,
and to advance the perimeter of the field through new
observations and novel concepts. The relationship with
AmeriPath should enable us to achieve this goal."
