Gastrointestinal Pathologist
In January 2003, Dr. Robert E. Petras was appointed as AmeriPath’s National Director of Gastrointestinal Pathology Services and Director of the AmeriPath Institute of Gastrointestinal Pathology and Digestive Disease. During the last 25 years of his distinguished career, Dr. Petras served in a series of key leadership positions at the Cleveland (Ohio) Clinic Foundation, including Chairman, Department of Anatomic Pathology; Vice Chairman, Division of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine; Residency Program Director, Anatomic and Clinical Pathology; and Program Coordinator, Medical Student Clerkships in Pathology. As a fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), College of American Pathologists (CAP), and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP), Dr. Petras has held numerous offices and appointments of signifance. These included the Presidency of the Gastrointestinal Pathology Society; Chairman, National Meeting Workshops Subcommittee for the Anatomic Pathology Council, ASCP; and Chairman of several Digestive Disease Week abstract review committees for the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA). Dr. Petras is a frequent lecturer at several American universities and at meetings and conferences of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, United States College of Anatomic Pathology, ACG, AGA, and other GI-relevent societies that focus on digestive diseases. He has written two books, produced more than 20 book chapters, coauthored over 200 GI disease-related scientific publication articles, developed a line of GI pathology audio publications, and has worked with the Publications Teaching Aids Department, ASCP, in producing over 18 training modules on the treatment of specific cases of disease. In addition, Dr. Petras has held editorial board positions for such prestigious publications as the American Journal of Clinical Pathology, American Journal of Surgical Pathology, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and Modern Pathology. Dr. Petras has also held numerous nonacademic appointments of significance, including Deputy Director, CAP; Expert in Colorectal and Anal Tumors, CAP; Gastrointestinal Subspecialist, Panel of the USCAP; and has served in several key offices and on many committees of organizations concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of GI disease.
